How to launch on Product Hunt: cost, timing and the link
Product Hunt's own rules for a launch: free, scheduled up to a month ahead, live at 12:01 am Pacific, no upvote asks, and a link that isn't followed.

Launching on Product Hunt, in short
Launching on Product Hunt is free and needs a personal account, since company accounts are prohibited. You fill in a short form, schedule the launch up to a month ahead and go live at 12:01 am Pacific Time. On the day you answer comments and share the launch, but you never ask anyone to upvote it.
What you get is a day of attention and a product page that stays. The link to your site carries rel="ugc", which Google says it will generally not follow, so the listing isn't a followed backlink. Everything below comes from Product Hunt's own launch guide and help pages, read on 11 October 2026.
What it costs, and who can launch
Nothing. Product Hunt's launch guide answers the question "Is Product Hunt free?" with "Yes. It's 100% free to use." No page we read asks for a badge, a link back to Product Hunt or a fee.
The account is the one rule: "Company accounts are prohibited." A person launches the product as its maker, and teammates are added as makers by their Product Hunt usernames. The guide also suggests joining "well ahead of your launch (three months or more)". That way the people who will comment are on the platform when the day comes.
Do you need a hunter?
No. A hunter is the member who posts a product, and Product Hunt says there's "no discernible advantage to using a third-party hunter". It encourages makers to post their own launch.
Its own figures agree. By Product Hunt's count, 79% of featured posts came from makers who hunted their own product. So did 60% of the products that finished first of the day. Advice that makes a well-known hunter the key to a good launch runs against the platform's own guide.
What to prepare
The submission form is short, and Product Hunt publishes its limits. Write the tagline and the description first, since those two fields are capped.
| Field | Product Hunt's rule |
|---|---|
| Link | A direct link to the product's own page; no shortened or tracking links |
| Name | Only the product's name, no description or emojis |
| Tagline | At most 60 characters |
| Description | At most 500 characters |
| Launch tags | Up to 3 |
| Thumbnail | Square, 240x240 recommended, under 3MB |
| Gallery | At least two images, 1270x760 recommended |
| Video | Optional |
| First comment | Optional, written by the maker |
| Shoutouts | Three per launch |
| Scheduling | Up to one month in advance |
The two optional fields that matter
Product Hunt counts that 70% of the products that won Product of the Day, Week or Month had a first comment by the maker. About 53% of the day's winners since 2021 showed a video.
The guide suggests a first comment that covers the key features, who the product is for, your story and your goals, and that asks for feedback.
When to launch
Product Hunt recommends 12:01 am Pacific Time "for makers that are planning ahead", and you can schedule a launch up to one month in advance. Pacific Time moves with daylight saving, so the hour elsewhere depends on the season.
| 12:01 am Pacific is | Summer (PDT) | Winter (PST) |
|---|---|---|
| UTC | 07:01 | 08:01 |
| London | 08:01 | 08:01 |
| Berlin | 09:01 | 09:01 |
| New York | 03:01 | 03:01 |
| Bengaluru | 12:31 | 13:31 |
| Singapore | 15:01 | 16:01 |
Which day of the week
The guide doesn't pick one: "The best day to launch is the day on which you're most prepared. There are pros and cons to launching on each day." Pick the day you can spend in the comments from the first hour to the last.
On launch day: what you may and may not do
Share the launch where your users already are, link straight to it, and stay in the comments. Product Hunt's launch day answers say there's "no penalty for linking directly to your product", and that all upvotes are equal, the maker's included.
The one hard rule is about votes. You can't ask people to upvote; you ask them to visit and comment. Contests that require or reward upvotes are out too. If a maker breaks the rule, Product Hunt says it may ask for the posts to come down, and it can unfeature the launch.
How the leaderboard moves
The leaderboard changes through the day with upvotes, comments, the time since submission "and other factors". Product Hunt doesn't publish the rest: "We can't give the exact details of how our algorithm works because doing so would make it easier to be gamed."
Why a launch isn't featured
The homepage shows featured products by default, and the rest only under its "All" toggle. So a launch can be live and still not appear in the default view. If your product is live but missing from the homepage, look under All first.
Product Hunt's featuring guidelines, updated on 10 March 2026, say what it looks for. A product must be available now and be useful, novel, high craft or creative, though "Featured launches don't need to score high in every category."
Some kinds of launch aren't featured at all: waitlisted products, directories or lists, templates, podcasts, courses, services, stores, and hardware without a prominent digital part. "Not being featured doesn't reflect negatively on your product's quality or potential," the guidelines add.
After launch day
The product page stays. Product Hunt calls it the product's "permanent and comprehensive source of truth". The day's ranking ends, but launches still compete for Product of the Week and of the Month, so sharing can go on.
You can launch again "as often as you have new significant product iterations available." A launch that wasn't featured isn't the last chance, as long as the next one brings something new.
What a launch is worth
Attention, not a backlink. On a product page we read on 10 October 2026, the Visit website button carried rel="noreferrer noopener ugc". Google's guidance on qualifying links says links marked that way "will generally not be followed".
| Product Hunt | 104 launch sites we tried | |
|---|---|---|
| Free to get in | Yes | 54 of 104 |
| Badge on your site for the free route | Not asked | Asked by 31 |
| Followed link on the free route | No, the link is ugc | 7 of 104 |
| Paid only | No | 16 of 104 |
Where to go next
If a followed link is what you're after, few launch sites give one for free: 7 of the 104 we tried in October 2026. They're in the directory list, each with what it asks. Our Product Hunt review scores Product Hunt on the same rubric as every other site here.

Reviews this guide draws on
The most searched name in this database, and free: no badge, no link back, no fee, a launch day of the maker's choosing. What it gives is attention on one day, not a followed link: the website button is marked ugc.
A free launch that asks for nothing but patience: no badge to be listed and a review within a day, then the queue. The backlink is the catch: free launches get it only in the top 3, Premium at $39 guarantees it.
The clearest followed link in this database, stated in its own FAQ, but no free route at all: the cheapest plan is $39, featured on a random day. A startup that isn't selected gets its money back automatically.
